Oral health is maintained by good oral hygiene every day, regular recalls and prophylaxis!

We train our patients how to maintain their personal oral hygiene at a high level by recommending to each patient the most appropriate set of cleaning methods and tools – proper toothbrush, paste, mouthwash, interdental brushes, dental floss, means for controlling the efficacy of oral hygiene etc.

Prophylaxis (teeth cleaning) is a cleaning treatment for removal of tartar and dental plaque from teeth. It maintains gum healthy. It is performed twice a year in patients without periodontal diseases. In cases of gingivitis (inflammation of gums, bleeding, bad breath) and periodontal disease (inflammation is spread in bone surrounding the tooth, periodontal pockets, gum recession, visible root of the tooth, mobility, etc.) the prophylaxis is done more than twice a year and some other procedures are also recommended.

The dental plaque is an invisible sticky biofilm that consists of microorganisms, food residues, and so on. If the dental plaque is not periodically removed, it mineralizes under the action of the minerals in the saliva and becomes hard tartar that can not be removed at home.

Untreated dental plaque and tartar lead to gum disease (gingivitis and periodontal diseases) and dental caries.

Discolorations due to coffee, tea, cigarettes, red wine, some other food and drinks make teeth stained and yellowish which decreases the dental aesthetics.

Prophylaxis (teeth cleaning) includes:

Removal of tartar and dental plaque with ultrasound

The ultrasound tip vibrates lightly and removes what is stick on the teeth surface (tartar/ calculus and plaque) without damaging the enamel of the teeth.

Cleaning of dental plaque and discolorations with airflow

Cleaning with airflow is a treatment of the surface of the teeth with special dental powder (dental soda) under pressure and water spray. It is very effective between the teeth, under dental bridges, difficult areas for cleaning, in cases of discolorations due to coffee, tea, cigarette, etc. After removal of these dark spots the natural color of the teeth is achieved. If you want even whiter teeth, this can be achieved by teeth whitening. Read more in section Aesthetic Dentistry.

Polishing, administration of fluoride if needed

Polishing helps achieving smoother teeth surfaces and reducing debris, bacteria and deposits adhesion. Fluoride helps enamel and dentin to stay healthy without caries.

Scaling and root planing of periodontal pockets

In case of advancing periodontal disease bone loss, beading of the gums, bad breath etc. are present. The periodontal pockets deeper than 3 mm need special treatment under local anesthesia- scaling and root planning, application of medications, etc.

Splinting of periodontally compromised teeth

In periodontal disease, bone is lost around the teeth, whereby they become exposed and movable. The bone loss is visible on a panoramic X-ray. Splinting with a special fiber and composite material is a last chance to keep such teeth functional a little longer.

Before- periodontally compromised teeth- mobility, distance between the teeth
Splint therapy- teeth are stable, free space between them is closed aesthetically

Prophylaxis (teeth cleaning) is recommended:

  • in patients with higher risk of periodontal diseases- diabetes, pregnancy, etc. Read more about gingivitis during pregnancy in our Blog.
  • before all kind of dental procedures such as teeth whitening, fillings, dental crowns and bridges, orthodontic treatment, extractions, implants, etc.
